A mountain never argues with the sky,
Yet clouds bow low whenever it is nigh.

लिबास की चमक तो दो पल में उतर जाती है,
किरदार की रौशनी उम्र भर ठहर जाती है।

libaas ki chamak to do pal mein utar jaati hai,
kirdaar ki raushni umr bhar thahar jaati hai.

Before a single word had left his tongue,
His presence had already sung.

पेड़ कुछ नहीं कहता, बस छाँव देता है,
बड़ा वही है जो हर थके को ठाँव देता है।

ped kuchh nahin kehta, bas chhaanv deta hai,
bada wahi hai jo har thake ko thaanv deta hai.

A teacher's chalk is dust upon the floor,
But what she lit in us still glows once more.

शोर से नहीं, शान से पहचान बनती है,
सच्चे इंसान की ख़ामोशी भी जान बनती है।

shor se nahin, shaan se pehchaan banti hai,
sachche insaan ki khamoshi bhi jaan banti hai.

Be a lamp, not a fire that burns and bends;
The steady light is what a crowd attends.

गुरु ने जो दिया जलाया था मेरे मन में,
आज भी उजाला है उसका हर जीवन में।

guru ne jo diya jalaya tha mere man mein,
aaj bhi ujaala hai uska har jeevan mein.

The leader who can listen more than speak
Has strength that louder voices vainly seek.

ज़बाँ से कुछ न कहा, फिर भी बात हो गई,
उनके आने भर से ही रौशन रात हो गई।

zabaan se kuchh na kaha, phir bhi baat ho gayi,
unke aane bhar se hi raushan raat ho gayi.

Some people pull the whole room to their side,
Not with a push, but with a steady stride.

उनकी नज़रों का कुछ ऐसा असर देखा है,
हर बेचैन दिल को मैंने ठहरते देखा है।

unki nazron ka kuchh aisa asar dekha hai,
har bechain dil ko maine thaharte dekha hai.

His voice is soft, he never has to shout,
The loudest room grows quiet when he is out.

सादगी में भी एक अजब सा नूर होता है,
जो झुकता है वही सबसे मशहूर होता है।

saadgi mein bhi ek ajab sa noor hota hai,
jo jhukta hai wahi sabse mashhoor hota hai.

She walked in with no drum, no call, no flame,
Yet every heart went still and knew her name.

वो आए तो महफ़िल में ख़ामोशी छा गई,
बिना कुछ कहे ही हर नज़र उन पर आ गई।

wo aaye to mehfil mein khamoshi chha gayi,
bina kuchh kahe hi har nazar un par aa gayi.
