We have come together once again to celebrate our Independence Day, a day we associate with flags, parades, and patriotic songs. But today, I want to talk about something quieter and perhaps more important: our duties as citizens of this free nation. Freedom is often described as a right, but it comes bundled with responsibilities that we sometimes forget. Our Constitution does not only grant us fundamental rights; it also lists fundamental duties, duties to respect our national symbols, to protect public property, to preserve our environment, and to promote harmony among our diverse communities. Yet, how often do we see these duties practiced in daily life? We complain about potholed roads but throw litter on the streets ourselves. We criticize corruption but try to bribe our way past a traffic fine. We demand honesty from our leaders but hesitate to pay our taxes honestly. True patriotism is not loud sloganeering once a year; it is the quiet discipline of following traffic rules, paying taxes on time, voting in every election, respecting people from different backgrounds, and raising our voices against injustice through lawful means. It is choosing to plant a tree instead of cutting one, choosing to report wrongdoing instead of ignoring it, and choosing to teach our children values instead of shortcuts. A nation is only as strong as the character of its citizens. The freedom fighters gave us a free India; it is now our duty to give that India good citizens. Let this Independence Day be a reminder that the tricolour we salute today demands not just our respect, but our responsibility. Let us pledge to be citizens our nation can be proud of. Jai Hind.
