On this World Environment Day, I want to draw your attention to a crisis that surrounds us in literally every corner of our lives: plastic pollution. Since plastic became widely used in the mid-twentieth century, humanity has produced billions of tonnes of it, and most of that plastic still exists somewhere on this earth today, because plastic does not truly disappear. It breaks into smaller and smaller pieces called microplastics, which now contaminate our soil, our rivers, our oceans, and shockingly, even our own bloodstream. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter our oceans, choking marine life, entangling turtles and seabirds, and forming massive floating garbage patches larger than entire countries. Fish mistake plastic fragments for food, and through the food chain, these particles eventually return to our own dinner plates. Walk through any street, market, or riverside in our own city, and you will see plastic bags, bottles, and wrappers scattered everywhere, clogging drains and worsening floods during the monsoon. This crisis was created by convenience, and it must be solved through conscious effort. We must say no to single-use plastic items like straws, cutlery, and carry bags, and instead choose reusable alternatives made of cloth, jute, steel, or glass. Schools, shops, and households must commit to proper waste segregation so that recyclable plastic actually gets recycled instead of ending up in landfills or waterways. Businesses must be encouraged, and where necessary required, to adopt eco-friendly packaging. Each one of us holds the power to refuse, reduce, and reuse plastic in our daily lives. Let today be the day we pledge to break free from our dependence on this convenient but deadly material. A cleaner ocean, a healthier food chain, and a safer planet for generations to come depend on the choices we make starting now. Thank you.
