After three procedures were carried out throughout the globe and proven effective, experts concluded that face transplants are now a feasible alternative for patients with severe deformities and injuries.

After the first face transplant was performed on Isabelle Dinoire in France in November 2005, further procedures have been carried out by the same team as well as by medical professionals in China.

A complete face transplant has not yet been performed anywhere in the world, but surgeons from the United Kingdom headquartered at the Royal Free hospital in London have been granted permission to do a procedure that has the potential to entail removing the ears, nose, and even a portion of the donor’s scalp.

Surgeons published their findings in The Lancet on the outcomes of the second and third transplants to be performed two years after the procedures.

In the first case, a patient in his 30s was mauled by a bear in October of 2004, and in the second case, a patient suffered from a large tumor.

Both patients’ post-operative checks indicated that the surgeries were successful, and any difficulties, such as the body’s rejection of the donor tissue, were effectively addressed.

Because the skin grafts taken from the man’s arm were unsuccessful, the man’s physicians opted to try a transplant after a big portion of the man’s face, including his nose, was torn off by the bear assault.

The deceased face donor was a guy of 25 years old who had been involved in a car accident before to his loss. In April of 2006, the transplant surgery was carried out after the family of the donor gave their approval of the procedure.

The team of plastic surgeons was directed by Professor Shuzhong Guo, who was based out of Xijing Hospital and Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an, which is located in Shaanxi Province, China.

They reconnected the patient’s arteries, veins, and nerves throughout the course of an 18-hour procedure, and they also rebuilt the patient’s nose, top lip, and sinuses.

In order to lessen the likelihood of the body rejecting the transplanted tissue, four different medicines were given.

According to what the researchers said, facial transplantation had the potential to be effective in the short run, despite the fact that the treatment did not come without any risks. On the other hand, the fact that the surgery has shown some promise suggests that it might be a viable alternative for the long-term rehabilitation of severe facial deformities.

The second instance was a guy of French-Caribbean descent who was 29 years old and whose face had been horribly damaged as a result of a hereditary tumor known as a neurofibroma.

In this particular instance, the donor was a patient who had passed away yet still had a beating heart. The procedure, which was performed at the Henri Mondor University Hospital in Creteil, France and over the course of 15 hours was directed by Professor Laurent Lantieri.

13 months after receiving surgery, the individual achieved a complete recovery and returned to work in a full-time capacity.

In their written report, Prof. Lantieri’s team said, “Our case confirms that face transplantation is surgically feasible and effective for the correction of specific disfigurement, which was due in this case to a genetic disorder.”
