A Retiree's Own Farewell Speech to Coworkers

Thank you all for being here. Standing in front of you today, after twenty-eight years, feels surreal. I walked through these doors as a nervous twenty-four year old who barely knew how to work the copier, and I am leaving as someone who genuinely considers many of you family. I want to start by saying thank you, not in the polite, obligatory way, but truly. Thank you for the patience you showed me when I was learning, for the trust you placed in me when I was leading, and for the grace you extended on the days I fell short. This job gave me more than a career. It gave me a community. I think of the early mornings when a handful of us would grab coffee before anyone else arrived, solving the world's problems before nine o'clock. I think of the deadlines that seemed impossible until somehow, together, we made them possible. I think of birthdays celebrated in the break room, babies announced over email, and the quiet support offered during harder seasons of life. Those moments are the real currency of a career, far more valuable than any line on a paycheck. I will not pretend this is easy. This place has been part of my identity for almost three decades, and walking away from that is bittersweet. But I am also genuinely excited. I am excited to travel without checking my email, to spend unhurried afternoons with my grandchildren, and to finally finish the woodworking projects gathering dust in my garage. To my colleagues, especially the ones I have mentored over the years, trust yourselves. You are more capable than you know, and this place is in good hands with you in it. To my friends here, please stay in touch. My door, or rather my porch, is always open. Thank you for twenty-eight unforgettable years. I leave here grateful, full, and ready for whatever comes next.
