This is a mural whose author made it only from bottle caps

Oscar Olivares is only 23 years old, but he is immensely mature about the importance of environmental causes. And he has taken it to the walls of the El Hatillo neighborhood, on the outskirts of Caracas, Venezuela. Through a collection of plastic bottles, he managed to gather 200,000 caps and built an incredible mural 45 meters long and height ranging from 3 to 7 meters.

Oscar’s mural is now one of the largest in all of South America and has been a great example for urban reconstruction in several degraded regions of Caracas. Installation of the mural took 3 months The ecological mural took 3 months to complete. Oscar still had the help of volunteers from the Movement of Architecture for the Future and the NGO Okospiri.

Even so, Oscar left the project always available to anyone who wanted to help him. The intention was that, during construction, the people involved would also become aware of issues of ecology, environmental protection and the importance of recycling.

Oscar said that just as everyone can do small collaborations for a bigger job, we can take this idea to protect the planet, through small gestures in everyday life. “The most stimulating part is what is behind the mural, its preparation. In particular, the collection of caps of the necessary colors, mainly yellow ones, which were made by many people who collaborated. This is not art made by an artist, but art made by ordinary people.” Inspiration came from the works of Van Gogh
The yellow tones and other details in Oscar’s work came from a Van Gogh-inspired style. He used sunflowers, elements of the local culture, like colorful parrots and the city of Caracas portrayed at night with all its lights. In another part of the mural, Oscar painted two UFOs, representing the connection between man and space, Oscar’s work has a very important value.
