The grandmother wanted to live separately from the family, but not to leave her garden. The family turned the garage into a home

This is a good alternative to a prefabricated studio to put in the garden or to build a wooden chalet. The architects started to create a bright and beautiful house from an existing garage. How can you offer solutions to your parents or grandparents when they can no longer stay at home but don’t want to go somewhere else to live?

In France, several companies offer to build prefabricated houses in gardens to house an elderly parent. An American grandmother chose to turn her garage into a cozy little home for her not-so-great grandmother ․ “They didn’t have enough room to fit hee in their house and couldn’t afford to buy a bigger house in the area,” says the architectural firm they did call.

The construction of the garage was done in the garden, as shown in the photo below. The principle was to be able to watch over their grandmother while giving her maximum autonomy and privacy ․ The garage served as a storage area for the family.

It had the advantage of offering an independent entrance, the old sliding door having been removed to make way for a classic door opening onto a charming stone path lined with planters and flowers. However, the garage was not large enough to accommodate living space, so it was expanded to 53 m². Indeed, the architects wanted to expand the house. Instead of creating many small rooms, the team chose to create open spaces. Although all living spaces are on one level, the architects raised the roof.

Between the many openings, the light wood and the white painted walls, the result was very bright. First of all, above the bathroom, the architects created a floor. This could be used as a storage space, or converted into an office or bedroom. A staircase is also provided in the garden for direct access to this floor.
