An young Texas student has turned around the life of an abandoned baby found in dumpster in Haiti with incredible act of kindness.
Five years ago, Jimmy Amisial was visiting his home country during a study break from Texas State University when he saw a baby lying in a trash can in 2017.
Talking about that day, Amisial, 27, says, “When I woke up that day, I was totally unaware that my life was about to change forever.”
There was a lot of commotion around the trash bin, says Amisial, because everyone had their own opinion to share, but nobody wanted to help that baby out.
“People were crowding round this bin, and I heard them arguing about what to do with this tiny baby. Everyone was just staring at him — not a single soul wanted to help. He was crying and had no clothes on, and I could see the pain in his eyes — I had to do something,” he said.
We believe that God put Amisial at the right place right time that day so that he could save that little baby’s life. He took the baby to his mother, Elicie Jean, in Gonaives, Haiti, and they cleaned him up and put on clothes and gave him some milk to drink, and then took him to the doctor to treat his ant bites.
Amisial had a tough decision to make when the judge asked him if he would become the boy’s legal guardian as his parents were untraceable. “When I was asked to raise him, I stayed awake for days tossing and turning, trying to make a decision. I was already behind on my university fees, and my family has always struggled to make ends meet,” he said.
“But I didn’t have a dad growing up, and this poor child faced a lifetime of instability and uncertainty. Something inside told me that this had happened for a reason — so I took a leap of faith. Sometimes you don’t have to know what to do, you just have to be ready, to do it,” Amisial said.
After facing a tough childhood without a dad, Amisial decided he would bring up the child together with his mom, and so Emilio Angel Jeremiah had a home. Since then, he has been spending time between school and working in Gonaives, which has slowed down his journey to achieve a degree, but he has no regrets about the decision he made.
“I found him; he was four months old — now he’s nearly 5. It’s been an incredible journey and watching him grow up has been so rewarding — I’m very proud of him,” Amisial said.
“I had to do what I had to do when no one else wanted to do it, and I’m so grateful for the past four-and-a-half years. I truly do feel like a father, and I’m excited to put pen to paper and make Emilio my son,” he said. He’s in the process of raising the money to legally adopt the boy who’s soon to start school.
Amisial has been the hands and feet of Jesus in this world as he spends his time, money, and resources, on the little boy. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to transform his life from being abandoned in the trash to being a wonderful treasure. It’s been fun seeing him grow — he’s a joy to be around,” he said.
He has no regrets in the end, as he says, “Mom loves him, the kids in the orphanage love him, and I love him as if he were my own. He really is a special little boy.”
What a beautiful story of hope and encouragement this is in a world full of selfishness. May we learn to open our hearts and lives like Amisial did, when the Lord nudges us to do so.
