A carpenter was building a temple in a forest clearing and had been sawing a thick wooden log in half, driving a wooden wedge into the growing crack to keep the two halves apart while he worked. When the midday heat grew too strong, he set down his tools and went off to rest in the shade, leaving the half-sawn log with the wedge still wedged firmly inside the gap.
