The Monkey and the Wedge

Added By - Admin

A carpenter was building a temple in a forest clearing and had been sawing a thick wooden log in half, driving a wooden wedge into the growing crack to keep the two halves apart while he worked. When the midday heat grew too strong, he set down his tools and went off to rest in the shade, leaving the half-sawn log with the wedge still wedged firmly inside the gap. A troop of curious monkeys soon arrived at the worksite, leaping and playing among the abandoned tools, fascinated by everything they found. One bold monkey climbed onto the log and noticed the wooden wedge holding the crack open, and despite warnings from an older, wiser monkey who urged him to leave it alone, his curiosity got the better of him. He settled himself directly over the gap and began tugging at the wedge with both hands, determined to pull it free. The wedge finally came loose all at once, and the two halves of the log snapped shut instantly, trapping the monkey painfully in the crack before he could escape. His cries of pain echoed through the forest as the other monkeys scattered in fear. The old monkey shook his head sadly, reminding the others that meddling with matters that do not concern you often leads to painful consequences.
