The Lion and the Clever Rabbit
Popular Stories Topics for You.
A mighty lion once terrorized a forest, killing far more animals than he needed for food. Fearing for their survival, the animals approached him with a proposal: each day, one animal would willingly come to his den as his meal, sparing him the trouble of hunting, if he agreed to stop killing indiscriminately. The lion accepted, and for a time the arrangement worked, until one day it was the turn of a small, clever rabbit to be sent. The rabbit walked slowly toward the den, deliberately taking his time, and arrived very late, making the lion furious with hunger and impatience. When the lion roared at him for his delay, the rabbit bowed humbly and explained that he had been stopped on the way by another lion living in a deep well nearby, who claimed to be the true king of the forest and threatened to kill him. Enraged at the idea of a rival, the lion demanded to be shown this impostor at once. The rabbit led him to a deep well and pointed down at the water. The lion peered over the edge and saw his own reflection staring back, mistaking it for the rival lion. Roaring with fury, he leaped into the well to attack his reflection and drowned, freeing the forest from his tyranny through the rabbit's clever wit.
