The Loyal Mongoose

Added By - Admin

A Brahmin and his wife raised a pet mongoose alongside their newborn son, and the loyal creature grew deeply attached to the baby, often guarding his cradle while the parents worked in the fields. One day, the wife asked her husband to watch the baby while she fetched water, but he was soon called away on an errand and left the mongoose alone with the sleeping child. While he was away, a venomous snake slithered into the house, slowly making its way toward the baby's cradle. The mongoose, sensing the danger immediately, attacked the snake fiercely and, after a fierce struggle, killed it, tearing it apart near the cradle to protect the child he loved. Covered in the snake's blood, the mongoose ran out eagerly to greet the mother as she returned, proud of what he had done. Seeing the blood on the mongoose's mouth and fearing the worst, the panicked mother assumed he had killed her baby and struck him dead instantly with the water pot in her hands, without pausing to look further. Rushing inside in grief, she found her baby alive and safe, sleeping peacefully beside the torn body of the dead snake. Overcome with sorrow for her hasty, mistaken act, she realized too late the terrible cost of judging without thinking first.
