The Dog and His Reflection
Popular Stories Topics for You.
A hungry dog once found a juicy bone in the butcher's yard and trotted off proudly with it clamped in his jaws. On his way home he had to cross a narrow wooden bridge over a stream. Looking down into the still water, he saw another dog staring back at him, holding what looked like an even bigger, juicier bone. Filled with greed, the dog did not realize he was only seeing his own reflection. He decided he wanted that bone too, so he opened his mouth to snap at the other dog and snarled fiercely. The moment he opened his jaws, his own bone fell from his mouth and dropped into the stream below, sinking out of sight forever. Now he had nothing at all, not even the bone he started with. He stood on the bridge whimpering, hungrier and sadder than before, having lost his real treasure while chasing an imaginary one. Other dogs in the village heard what happened and told the story for years afterward, warning their pups that greed often costs us the very thing we already have, and that being satisfied with what is truly ours is the wiser path.
