A hungry fox was wandering through an orchard when he spotted a bunch of plump, purple grapes hanging from a high vine. His mouth watered at the sight, and he decided he simply had to taste them. He crouched low and leaped as high as he could, but his jaws snapped shut on empty air far below the grapes. He tried again, backing up for a longer run before jumping, but still he fell short by a good distance. Determined, he tried a third time, a fourth, and a fifth, circling the vine and attempting every angle he could think of, but the grapes remained stubbornly out of reach no matter what he did. Exhausted and embarrassed, with no one around to witness his failed attempts, the fox finally gave up and turned to walk away. As he left, he muttered to himself that the grapes were probably sour anyway and not worth eating at all. He told himself he had not really wanted them in the first place. The other animals who later heard of his attempts smiled knowingly, for it is easy to despise what we cannot have, and far harder to admit that we simply failed to reach it.
