The Ant and the Grasshopper
Popular Stories Topics for You.
All through the warm summer months, a grasshopper spent his days singing and dancing in the meadow, enjoying the sunshine without a care. Nearby, a colony of ants worked tirelessly, carrying grains of food one by one back to their nest, preparing for the cold months ahead. The grasshopper laughed at them and asked why they wasted such beautiful days laboring instead of enjoying the music and warmth. The ants simply replied that winter would come whether he was ready or not, and kept working without pause. Sure enough, when winter arrived, snow covered the meadow and every blade of grass disappeared beneath the frost. The grasshopper had no food stored and no shelter prepared, and he grew weak and cold very quickly. Desperate, he knocked on the ants' door, begging for just a little food to survive the season. The ants, though sympathetic, reminded him that they had warned him all summer long. Still, moved by his suffering, they shared a small portion of their stores so he would not starve, on the condition that he learn to plan ahead. The grasshopper survived that winter, but he never again mocked hard work, and the next summer he worked alongside the ants.
