Kevin Costner has responded to his ex-wife Christine’s request that he pay a “whopping” $885K in legal fees by describing it as “nonsensical.”
Kevin Costner is fighting his separated wife Christine’s demand that he pay a “whopping” $885,000 toward her legal bills. Christine has asked Kevin to fulfill this obligation.
The 68-year-old Oscar winner’s legal team says in a court document seen by PEOPLE that the sum asked by Christine, 49, is “nothing short of outrageous” and “unreasonable.” The document was filed on Monday in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Barbara.
According to the document, Christine has already “removed $105,000 for fees from Kevin’s accounts” and “received $405,000 in fees, including an award of $300,000 in legal fees on July 12” ($200,000 in attorney’s fees and $100,000 in forensic accounting expenses).
According to the documents that Kevin has submitted, “the Family Code requires the Court to assess whether the fees that have been incurred and the prospective fees are reasonably necessary.”
According to the paper, “Even though Kevin is the wealthier party with a higher cash flow than Christine, Christine is quite capable of contributing to her own attorneys’ fees” (Despite the fact that Kevin is the wealthier party with a higher cash flow than Christine).
In an earlier part of the file, the legal team representing Kevin asserts that “Christine’s argument that Kevin has incurred more in fees than she was awarded and what she took from his accounts is not, standing alone, a valid basis for an award of additional fees to her.” [C]hristine’s argument that Kevin has spent more in fees than she was granted and what she took from his accounts.
According to what is said in the contract, “the amount Kevin has incurred cannot be used as the talisman of how much Christine should be awarded in fees.”
In addition to this, it is said that the actor from Yellowstone “has been forced to spend substantial attorney’s fees as a result of Christine’s uncooperative conduct,” and it is mentioned that Kevin “has had to repeatedly go to court in order to (successfully) obtain relief.”
According to what is stated in Kevin’s lawsuit, “Christine’s actions increased the fees that were incurred not only by Christine, but also by Kevin.” It makes no sense to argue that Christine should be required to pay more in order to level the playing field if you base your case on these costs.
The request for comment that PEOPLE made to Christine’s attorney was not immediately met with a response.
Kevin claimed that he racked up over $14,000 in legal expenses while attempting to get answers concerning Christine’s understanding of the prenuptial agreement (PMA) that the two of them had signed before getting married. Last week, Judge Thomas Anderle made the decision that Christine is responsible for paying Kevin back for those expenses.
The judge, Anderle, highlighted throughout the judgment that this is “certainly a case of consequence.”
lawyers for Kevin submitted a request for order to the California Superior Court last month, asking the court to force Christine to reply to their questions. According to the request for order, Christine “refuses to make known all of her contentions regarding the validity of the PMA.” Kevin’s lawyers urged the court to compel Christine to respond to their inquiries.
The actor’s legal representatives included the following statement in the papers that they submitted: “The objections she has mustered in an effort to not disclose her contentions are frivolous.” She claims that she does not comprehend concepts such as “understood” or “negotiation,” and as a result, she is unable to respond to this revelation.
In the document, it was stated that the total amount of money spent on legal expenses was $14,237.50, and it went on to say that “discovery is not a game of chicken.” It was very unacceptable for Kevin to be forced to spend his own money in order to submit a motion.
In May, after being married to Kevin for 18 years, Christine initiated the divorce process between the two of them. Cayden is 16 years old, Hayes is 14 years old, and Grace is 13 years old; they are all their children.
At the time that Christine filed for divorce, a representative for the actor issued a statement saying, “It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action.” The statement was made public shortly after the divorce petition was filed by Christine.
Late in the month of August, during a two-day court case in Santa Barbara to determine child support, a judge set the monthly payments Kevin will pay to Christine at $63,209. The judge agreed with Kevin’s proposed amount after she and her attorneys had requested $175,057, which was an increase from the $129,755 that the actor had been tentatively ordered to pay.
After Christine’s attorney John Rydell testified that the oceanfront lifestyle that the couple’s three children have enjoyed at their Santa Barbara compound is “in their DNA at this point,” Kevin took the stand and stated, “My biggest concern is that the court orders me to pay child support that is above the needs of my children and for the needs of Christine.”
The disbanded couple is scheduled to reappear in court in December in order to continue discussing the legality of the prenuptial agreement they had.
