His wife, model Ariana Cooper Whibley, said on Friday that frontman for the band Sum 41 Deryck Whibley was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia.

“Deryck and I were supposed to be in Chicago right now, celebrating our eight year wedding anniversary but the universe had a different plan for us,” Ariana, 32, said in an Instagram post, beside a picture of the Toronto-born singer, 43, being transported on a stretcher into an ambulance. Ariana’s statement was accompanied by a photo of Deryck, who was taken from the back of the ambulance.

Ariana continued by saying, “This is obviously not our first time in a situation like this, but it brings back a lot of really difficult memories seeing him back in a hospital bed connected to wires and IVs.”

A second shot that the model posted on her Instagram account showed a closeup of the model’s hand resting in Whibley’s as he lay in his hospital bed with a pulse oximeter attached to his finger.

“I know how strong he is because I have seen what he has been able to endure, but it does not make it any simpler to realize that he has prevailed. Ariana’s tweet came to a close by saying, “I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated, but if you could keep him in your heart over the next few days, we could really use it.” She added that she would do her best to keep everyone informed.

In April of 2014, Whibley passed out while he was in the kitchen. His then-fiancée rushed him to the hospital, where the medical staff determined that both his liver and kidneys had failed.

He was put into a coma and drugged for a week in order to assist his body in detoxing from the effects of alcohol, and the fear he had from his health helped him to ultimately quit drinking and restore his health.

After Whibley was sent to the hospital in 2014 and Ariana struggled with depression and made an attempt on her own life, the couple made the decision to become clean and sober together. “We said, ‘We’re going to take our lives seriously at this point and figure this s— out,'” Whibley told PEOPLE in 2021. “We’re going to take our lives seriously at this point and figure this s— out.”

When asked about his path to sobriety in 2015, over a year after his hospitalization, Whibley told Vice, “It was the right time in my life for it to happen.” I am relieved that it occurred to me now rather than when I am, say, 50 years old, since otherwise, my body would not have been able to deal with it. But it’s a shame that things had to get to that point in the first place. On the other hand, right now I’m feeling better than I ever have before. I am in better health. I’ve never been healthier in all of my years.

In August of 2015, the pair was married in the city of Los Angeles.

After the completion of their current global tour and the release of their newest album, Heaven and Hell, the members of Sum 41, Whibley, Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker, and Frank Zummo, announced in May through social media that they would be parting ways after the completion of these two endeavors. The band concluded their tour of the United States on September 3 alongside The Offspring and Simple Plan, although they are scheduled to appear at the When We Were Young 2023 festival in Las Vegas the following month.

“Since 1996, when we joined Sum 41, we’ve had some of the most memorable experiences of our life.
