Until Dark

We played until the darkness came to find us—
not until a clock said time was up,
but until the light itself recalled us,
the dusk the only stop.

No one wanted to be the first to leave—
the game was always one more round away,
the ending was the thing we most resisted,
the best part of the day.

I did not know that I was being young then,
I only knew the game and the desire—
it is only now I understand I was burning
