1 And David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader.

2 And David said unto all the assembly of Israel: 'If it seem good unto you, and if it be of HaShem our G-d, let us send abroad everywhere unto our brethren that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites that are in their cities that have open land about them, that they may gather themselves unto us;

3 and let us bring back the ark of our G-d to us; for we sought not unto it in the days of Saul.'

4 And all the assembly said that they would do so; for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

5 So David assembled all Israel together, from Shihor the brook of Egypt even unto the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of G-d from Kiriath-jearim.

6 And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of G-d, HaShem that sitteth upon the cherubim, whereon is called the Name.

7 And they set the ark of G-d upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab; and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.

8 And David and all Israel played before G-d with all their might; even with songs, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

9 And when they came unto the threshing-floor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.

10 And the anger of HaShem was kindled against Uzza, and He smote him, because he put forth his hand to the ark; and there he died before G-d.

11 And David was displeased, because HaShem had broken forth upon Uzza; and that place was called Perez-uzza unto this day.

12 And David was afraid of G-d that day, saying: 'How shall I bring the ark of G-d home to me?'

13 So David removed not the ark unto him into the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

14 And the ark of G-d remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months; and HaShem blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in 1 Chronicles chapter 13?
David decides to bring the ark of the covenant from Kirjath-jearim to Jerusalem, transporting it on a new cart. On the way, the oxen stumble, Uzza reaches out to steady the ark, and he is struck dead; a frightened David has the ark diverted to the house of Obed-edom instead.
Why did Uzza die for touching the ark?
When the oxen pulling the cart stumbled, Uzza put out his hand to keep the ark from falling, and 'the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him' (v. 10) for touching it, a moment so unsettling that the place was afterward named Perez-uzza.
What happened to Obed-edom after the ark was left at his house?
The LORD blessed Obed-edom's household during the three months the ark remained there (v. 14); his family's continued role around the ark is reflected later in 1 Chronicles 26:4-5.
