Frequently Asked Questions

What is Psalm 110 known for?
It's a short messianic psalm in which the LORD tells "my Lord" to sit at his right hand until his enemies become his footstool (v.1), and declares him "a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek" (v.4).
Who is Melchizedek, referenced in verse 4?
The text itself doesn't explain who Melchizedek was; v.4 simply quotes God's oath that this figure holds a permanent priesthood. The New Testament later applies this verse to Christ, as in Hebrews 10:12-13.
What happens in the psalm's closing verses?
Verses 5-7 picture the Lord's right hand striking down kings in the day of wrath and judging among the nations, ending with him drinking "of the brook in the way" before lifting up his head.
