1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth changes, and though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas,

3 though the waters of it roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with the swelling of it. Selah.

4 There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her. She shall not be moved. God will help her, and that right early.

6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved, he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

7 Jehovah of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

8 Come, behold the works of Jehovah, what desolations he has made in the earth.

9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and cuts the spear in two. He burns the chariots in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.

11 Jehovah of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Psalm 46 declare?
Psalm 46 declares confidence in God as protector even amid cosmic upheaval -- 'though the earth be removed' (v.2) -- describing a river that gladdens the city of God (v.4) and closing with God's command, 'Be still, and know that I am God' (v.10).
What does verse 1 mean by 'God is our refuge and strength'?
It sets up the psalm's central claim that God is 'a very present help in trouble,' meaning immediately available rather than distant. See Psalms 46:1.
What does 'Be still, and know that I am God' mean in verse 10?
It's God's own command in the middle of describing wars and desolations (vv.8-9), calling for trust and stillness rather than striving, since he 'will be exalted among the heathen.'
