Isaiah 61 - The Spirit of the Lord GOD Is Upon Me
Tap a verse to highlight it

1 The Spirit of the lord Jehovah is upon me, because Jehovah has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, and the opening of bonds to those who are bound,

2 to proclaim the acceptable year of Jehovah, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,

3 to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

4 And they shall build the old wastes. They shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

6 But ye shall be named the priests of Jehovah. Men shall call you the ministers of our God. Ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory ye shall boast yourselves.

7 Instead of your shame ye shall have double, and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double. Everlasting joy shall be to them.

8 For I, Jehovah, love justice. I hate robbery with iniquity. And I will give them their recompense in truth. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

9 And their seed shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which Jehovah has blessed.

10 I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah. My soul shall be joyful in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

11 For as the earth brings forth its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Isaiah 61 about?
The speaker describes being anointed by God's Spirit to 'preach good tidings unto the meek,' bind up the brokenhearted, and 'proclaim liberty to the captives' (v.1), then promises mourners 'beauty for ashes' and 'the oil of joy for mourning' (v.3), closing with rejoicing in the LORD (v.10).
What does Isaiah 61:1 say the speaker was anointed to do?
Isaiah 61:1 lists being sent 'to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound' - words later read aloud in Luke 4:18-19.
What does 'beauty for ashes' mean in Isaiah 61:3?
It's part of a list of reversals promised to those who mourn in Zion - ashes traded for beauty, mourning for 'the oil of joy,' and heaviness for 'the garment of praise' - so they become known as 'trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD.'

Today's Verse

And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.

Verse Of The Day

This opening declaration, examined closely at Isaiah 61:1, is the very passage Jesus reads aloud in the synagogue in Luke 4:18-19, and the chapter closes with the servant clothed in garments of salvation like a bridegroom and bride.
