We all want to live blessed lives and experience the promises and blessings of God. We want to live lives where we’re free from sickness and disease, our relationships are thriving, money isn’t a struggle, debts and bills are paid, and we are blessing others.
But many Christians struggle with how to take hold of these blessings. In the Bible, God gives us the key over and over again to unlocking His blessings. That key, in a phrase, is delight yourself in the Lord. Psalm 112:1, KJV, says it this way, “Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in His commandments.”
If you’re waiting for God to bless you, below are six keys to delighting yourself in the Lord that will help you unlock THE BLESSING in your life.
Key No. 1 – Realize That God Is the Source of All Blessing
Hopefully by now, you’ve figured out that God isn’t some Santa Claus in the sky who comes down your chimney and leaves you exactly what you want under the tree. He isn’t a genie in a bottle who appears at some chance moment to grant you three wishes in life. No, no, no. God is so much more. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the One who was, who is and who is to come (Revelation 1:8). He is the Source from whom all things—including you—were created.
Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The Hebrew translation of that verse is, “In the beginning, THE BLESSED One created the heavens and the earth.” God is THE BLESSER, and blessing originated from Him. Every good and perfect gift is from Him (James 1:17). Better than Santa Claus, a genie in a bottle, wishing on a star, or going your own way, God has a BLESSING plan for you to experience everything He promises.
Key No. 2 – Realize That the Choice to Be Blessed Is Yours
Here’s another scripture that tells you how to live blessed:
Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! –Deuteronomy 30:19
God tells us in this scripture that He has called heaven and earth as witnesses and set two choices before us: blessings or cursings, life or death. If we choose life, we will be blessed, and we will live. So, we have a choice. Do we want to be blessed and live? Or be cursed and die? Of course, we want to be blessed and live! There isn’t a person alive who would say they want to be cursed and die.
If this is the case, we have to ask, then why aren’t more people living blessed?
Well, that’s because you have to choose. God can’t do it for you. Your spouse can’t do it for you. Your parents can’t do it for you. And you don’t get to sit this one out and expect to be blessed. You can’t say, “Well, I haven’t made my mind up about God or that command yet. I’ll make my decision later, after I’ve had all my fun.” No, not choosing life and blessing is the same as choosing death and cursings. So, if you haven’t chosen life, you aren’t experiencing the fullness of abundant blessings God has promised you.
So, how do you choose life and blessing? You choose by making a conscious decision to honor God and obey His commands. You choose to delight in Him and His ways. You choose Psalm 112:1. This is the key to unlocking THE BLESSING of God in your life.
Key No. 3 –Realize That Fearing the Lord Leads to Blessing
It can be confusing to read an encouragement to “fear the Lord” in Scripture. This phrase seems to contradict God’s edict to “fear not,” a command that is listed 365 times throughout the Bible. However, the fear referenced in this scripture is not the terror and anxiety that God tells us to avoid. Just look at this more detailed translation of Psalm 112:1: “Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!) Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who fears the Lord [with awe-inspired reverence and worships Him with obedience], Who delights greatly in His commandments” (AMP).
God promises that you will be blessed when you revere, worship and obey Him. He doesn’t want you quaking in fear at the thought of Him or expecting ill effects from interacting with Him. No, He simply wants you to recognize who He is—the Creator of the Universe, the Alpha and the Omega, and your heavenly Father.
Key No. 4 – Realize That Delighting in His Commandments Leads to Blessing
Often when we think of God’s commandments, or His laws, we immediately return to the Big 10, the ones Moses brought down on tablets from Mount Sinai. But God’s commandments aren’t limited to those. In fact, there are hundreds of commands in the Old Testament alone.
However, as it became glaringly clear under the Old Covenant, God’s people have always been unable to follow His laws in their own strength. It took Jesus’ sacrifice to erase the stain of their sin.
Thankfully, Jesus showed God’s people another way, a way beyond rote obedience and a way into relationship. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus summed up all the Old Testament commandments in one word—love:
Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.
Loving God wholeheartedly and loving others is your No. 1 command. When you endeavor to keep the command of love with a pure motive, you are delighting in God’s commands.
But as we go back and consider Psalm 112:1, let’s look beyond the letter of God’s Word and reflect on its spirit. This verse—and every verse addressing the gratitude for and faithfulness to God’s commands—reflects a deeper calling to treasure His Word. Second Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”
We don’t have to walk around wondering why we’re not blessed! God gave us His Word to help us understand Him and His ways, and to assist us in living lives that reflect our salvation.
Key No. 5 – Realize That God’s Commands Are There to Bless You
The whole purpose of God’s commands is to set you up for THE BLESSING and prevent you from cursings that lead to death. Much like parents who give their children instructions that will prevent them from hurting themselves when they don’t know any better, God gives us instructions to keep us from getting hurt in this life. And He does it for one reason and one reason only…because He loves us.
Back to Psalm 112:1, do you delight in the Lord’s commands? If His commands are burdensome, it’s probably because you haven’t yet understood just how much He already loves you.
“I know God loves me,” you might insist.
Perhaps that’s true. But there’s a difference between mentally assenting to God’s love and really believing it with your heart. When you really believe from your heart that God loves you with a deep, passionate love, you will understand that His commands are given to you out of that love. You will delight yourself in them because you trust God’s love for you. You know that He’s not holding back or trying to punish you, but instead, His commands will lead to abundant life, protection from evil, and blessing.
Key No. 6 – Realize That God Loves You and Wants You Blessed
God loves you so much, and He desires an intimate relationship with you. First John 4:19 reminds us that “we love each other because He loved us first.” It is only out of that love, God’s love, that His blessings are possible. In fact, God demonstrated His love for us in that Christ died for us while we were yet still sinners (Romans 5:8). You are so important to God that He sent Jesus to ensure that you have the choice to live in relationship with Him forever and be blessed.
God wants you to delight in Him so that THE BLESSING will overtake you (Deuteronomy 28:2, NKJV). If you’re not experiencing God’s blessings, meditate on these six keys. Seek the Lord and ask Him to give you revelation. Delighting yourself in the Lord’s commands is easy when you understand just how much the Lord truly loves you. When you realize His eternal love for you, you can’t help but delight in Him and His Word.
As you do, His commands won’t be burdensome, and you will experience great peace and joy as a result of choosing life and blessings. Be patient and diligent to fight the good fight of faith, and THE BLESSING of the Lord will soon overtake you!
