If you feel like you’re about to hit your breaking point, don’t ignore it. Nervous breakdowns are real and dangerous things.
They can strike when you’re least expecting them to. When one takes ahold of you, it can be incredibly difficult to reverse it. That’s why it’s best to know of the signs ahead of time.
Here are six things to look out for with a nervous breakdown.
1. Heart problems
Your heartbeat should happen without you thinking about it. When you’re going through a nervous breakdown, however, it can feel like your heart is going crazy. It’ll beat erratically and intensely.
While you might be aware of how fast your heart is going, you might have trouble calming down through means like breathing.
Your breath may become rapid and shallow. The best way to control this is through smooth, full breaths through the diaphragm to your nostrils and then out your mouth slowly.
2. Headaches
There’s definitely a link between nervous breakdowns and headaches. When we feel stressed, our minds feel under a tremendous amount of pressure.
Our stress consumes every part of our body and gives our heads a lion’s share of the abuse. This isn’t just stressful. It’s downright painful. You need to learn to keep your stress at bay before it can cause substantial damage.
3. Sleep Problems
Going to bed might seem like a way to escape from your problems, but if they’re big enough, it can mean that going to bed just means tossing and turning for hours.
Trying to not think about our problems can’t just make them bigger. Instead, you need to work on staying mindful to fall asleep. You can observe your breath as it makes your stomach rise and fall.
It might not eliminate tension completely, but it can definitely help you feel better.
4. Stomach pain
We all can relate to having “butterflies” in our stomachs. When you’re on the verge of a nervous breakdown, it can feel like you have a perpetual stomach ache.
Stress makes our bodies feel unwell which can lead to our stomachs being under a tremendous amount of pain. You might also have properly digesting food when a nervous breakdown is approaching.
5. Can’t Focus
Have you ever tried to force yourself to focus on something, only to find that you kept coming back to all your problems? When you have stress running through your mind, it can be impossible to focus on anything else.
Even just narrowing your focus to a single problem can be difficult. It’s no use telling yourself to not think about your problems or to just relax. What you can do is acknowledge your problems, determine a way to deal with them, and then try to return to the present moment.
You don’t have to put yourself under too much pressure either. Try to focus on things for one minute a time. With repeated practice, it’ll be easier to focus in longer durations.
6. Anxiety
There’s no surer sign of a nervous breakdown approaching than anxiety. In a way, a nervous breakdown is anxiety at its most intense.
However, you don’t need to be going through a nervous breakdown to know how painful and difficult anxiety can be.
Anxiety can be tackled through exercise, mindfulness meditation, therapy, and anti-anxiety medication.
Going through a nervous breakdown can be especially painful, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. When you get through a nervous breakdown, you can come out stronger than before.
Show this to anyone who might have problems with stress and anxiety. You could be affecting their life for the better.
Make sure that they know that they are not alone. This type of stress can truly be devastating for a person.
