3 Foundational Truths About Miracles

Are you ready to experience miracles? Would you like to see them in your life and ministry? If you believe in Jesus, that is possible! Jesus promised it would happen when He said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father” (John 14:12).

Miracles and the working of miracles are part of living a Spirit-filled, Spirit-directed life. If you are willing to be used by God in this way and obedient to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, then miracles are not only possible, but probable!

It’s important for you to understand the foundation for miracles if you are going to operate in them. Three foundational truths about miracles that will help you do greater works than Jesus are: 1) they are available by resurrection power; 2) they are available to every believer; and 3) you should ask for them in the Name of Jesus.

1.Miracles Are Available by the Resurrection Power of the Holy Spirit

Miracles can only be worked by the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit, which is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. It’s also the same power that Jesus used to heal lepers, calm storms and feed the multitudes. And if Christ did it, then those who have been saved through Him can do it too, according to John 14:12.

After Jesus’ ascension, His followers came together to seek God for direction. It was a critical time in the Body of Christ. The Son of God had redeemed the very first believers, leading them back into right relationship with the Father through Him. Those believers, who could have been executed for following Jesus, prayed:

“And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness…. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. –Acts 4:29-33

The Holy Spirit met them in that moment. He filled that room and enveloped their lives. Through the Name of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, they were ready to continue the work the Messiah had begun.

2.Miracles Are Accessible to Every Believer

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.” (Mark 16:15-17)

The enemy would love to convince Christians that miracles are not available to every believer, but that is not what Jesus said. Satan would love to limit the number of believers who understand that the Holy Spirit can just as effectively work through them as through anyone, regardless of their 9-5 jobs, ministry experience or educational achievements. While those are noble, they do not credit or discredit anyone. Every miracle happens because of resurrection power, not man’s power (Acts 4:33). God can use anyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ.

Miracles are also as available today as they were to the first-century Christians. They have not passed away as some teach. All around the world believers testify to the miracle-working power of Jesus. He is at work. He is still delivering, healing, blessing, prospering and fulfilling the promises of God.

3.Miracles Are Asked for in the Name of Jesus

“You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father” (John 14:13). Above we read in John 14:12 that Jesus promised His followers would do as much or more than He. Three words are the key to fulfilling that promise: “in My Name.” It is not by anyone else’s strength that miracles occur except Jesus’. When we pray for healing, it is in the Name of Jesus. When we pray for water in dry places, it is in the Name of Jesus. When we pray for spiritual or financial breakthrough, it is in the Name of Jesus.

Miracles will never happen because we have been good enough, popular enough, educated enough or any other “enough.” Miracles only happen because Jesus makes them happen. It is only because the thing we are praying for is ordained by Him and lines up with God’s Word.

The supernatural move of God is coming to the end-time church, and as the supernatural Body of Christ, we should want to be used by God to do greater works that display His glory for all the world to see. Once you understand these foundational truths about the miraculous, you are on your way.

If you truly desire God to use you to work miracles, the next step is to begin seeking Him for direction and blessing. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what to do and when to do it. Then, be obedient to what He shows you. And above all, ask for it in the Name of Jesus, for it is only by Him that miracles are ever possible!
