10 Remarkable Reasons Why Jesus Had to Die

The foundation and veracity of Christianity lie in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But why would Jesus have to die? Isn’t it enough for God the Father to simply save the entire human race? After all, He is the mighty and Supreme Ruler of the whole universe. Why did He have to send His only begotten Son to die for every single soul who has ever lived and died throughout the generation?

The answer may shock you.
Understanding the reason why Jesus had to die helps us appreciate the meaning of Christ’s death and the indescribable, unlimited love of God toward us.

In this blog, let me share with you ten of the reasons why Jesus Christ have to die.

Reason no. 1: the wages of sin of death
The moment Adam and Eve committed the first sin, we have the penalty of death hanging around our necks. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death.”

When we sin, we die. Since “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), all of us are going to die.
Left on our own, we are doomed to die because of our sins.

Now, the law demands our lives so that we can pay for our sins. But by paying our sins with our life as the price tag, we stop existing throughout eternity. God does not want that.
This is where the sacrifice of Jesus comes in. Instead of us dying for our sins, Jesus took our place.

He died so that we may live.
Since He is God in the flesh (John1:14), His human life is enough to pay for the sins of all humanity.

Reason no. 2: Jesus died so our sins can be forgiven
The second reason of Christ’s death is related to the first reason. Jesus died for our sins. We read:

“And Christ himself is the means by which OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone” (I John 2:2, GNB).

From this verse, it is apparent that Christ’s death made it possible for our sins to be forgiven. Hebrews 10:4 added, “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.”
The sacrificial system of the ancient Israel was just a reminder and forerunner of the sacrificial death of Jesus for them and for us.

Here’s a simple fact that we need to understand: without sin, there is no need for the death of Christ. However, since sin has entered the world, then Christ’s death is required to completely wipe it away.
We also read that God the Father “made Him who knew no sin [Jesus Christ] to be sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Christ took our sins and paid the penalty of sin through His life.

Reason no. 3: Jesus died so we may have eternal life
John 3:16 is perhaps the most familiar verse in the Bible. Almost every Christian probably know about this verse. It says:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have EVERLASTING LIFE.”

Without the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, it would be impossible for us to obtain eternal life. Since no one paid for our sins, then we will all simply stop to exist. However, with Jesus dying for our sins, we are given the chance to live not just for a few years, but for eternity!

Reason no. 4: God is building a Family
We are created for a higher purpose. There’s more to life than just living and dying.

God is expanding His Family through us. For now, the God Family is composed of God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son. The reason why God wants to save us from our sins is so that we can live forever in His Family.

We read:
“And will be a Father unto you, and YE SHALL BE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS, saith the Lord Almighty” (II Corinthians 6:18).

Reason no. 5: Jesus died to enable us to live for righteousness
Jesus died for our sins, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t need to do anything. Like a man pardoned by a judge for his crimes, that man is not free to commit another crime when he is released. In fact, that man is expected to change and improve his life.

The same goes with us, Christians. Jesus bought us with a price. He didn’t die for our sins for nothing. He died so that our sins will be forgiven.
Now that our sins are forgiven, what should we do? Does it mean that we are free to do whatever we want? Obviously, the answer is NO.

The Apostle Peter wrote that Jesus “bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, MIGHT LIVE FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (1 Peter 2:24).

Since Christ died for us, we must not make His sacrifice in vain. We need to live a life of righteousness, a life dedicated to following God and doing His will in our lives.

Reason no. 6: Jesus died because God loves us
When we think of the reasons why Jesus died for us, we rarely think of God’s tremendous and indescribable love for us.

Can you imagine the pain that God has to go through? While it is fitting for us to also reflect on the love of Jesus toward us, we also must not forget about the sacrifice God the Father made.

If you are a father, are you going to let your child die for another person’s crime? Of course not! The thought of sacrificing your child for the good of others can torment one’s sanity. However, God the Father made the ultimate act of love by sacrificing His Son for sinful, rebellious, and unfaithful human beings.

We read:
“And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that HE LOVED US and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven” (I John 4:9).

Reason no. 7: Christ died for our healing
Many don’t realize it, but the death of Christ is actually part of our healing. When we are sick, when we suffer from physical ailments, we can boldly come to God’s throne and ask for healing. Why? Because Christ died for us.

Isaiah 53:5 tells us:
“He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED.”

Reason no. 8: Christ’s death reconciled us to God the Father
Sin separated us from God the Father. Thankfully, the death of Jesus made it possible for us to be reconciled again to God. We read in Romans 5:10:

“For if while we were enemies, we were RECONCILED to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life” (Romans 5:10, NRSV).

With Jesus as our High Priest, we can now “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Reason no. 9: The death of Christ enables Him to sympathize with us
All of us have experienced temptations in our lives. However, it was only Christ who experienced temptation at its FULL EXTENT. When we are tempted, we already give in when there’s more to endure. However, Christ felt the full power of every temptation to the point of His physical death.

Because of this, we now have a High Priest who can “SYMPATHIZE with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).

Reason no. 10: The death of Christ maintained the integrity of God’s law and justice

God is the God of love and mercy, but He is also the God of justice at the same time. God can’t compromise with what is right and wrong, good and evil. That’s why when the law demands the payment of sin in the form of our death, He can’t just disregard His perfect law and justice.

Yes, God can simply forgive us and waive that penalty of sin, but what does that tell us? If He does that, then God is contradicting Himself and even defying the very law He instituted.

With Christ death, we are justified. Instead of dying for our sins, we can now live because someone took our place and that Someone is Jesus Christ.

Final words

With this list, I hope that you now have an idea why Jesus have to die for our sins. He died to save us from our sins. He died so that we may live and be part of the future Kingdom of God. May we all appreciate the death of Jesus Christ and respond accordingly to His invitation to live a life pleasing to God and His Son.
